A kitchen benchtop run may be around 2 metres or longer, but that does not mean the whole length is available for the sink. The space must be shared between food preparation, everyday items, the sink and tap, while the cabinets below may also need to accommodate a dishwasher, oven, drawers and plumbing.

1. Plan the Full Benchtop Run
Start with the complete usable run, then divide it into working zones. A sink that technically fits within a 2 metre benchtop can still be too large if it removes the clear area needed for chopping, unpacking groceries or placing dishes and small appliances.
2. Map the Lower Cabinets and Appliances
The benchtop may continue across several modules, but the sink can only occupy the cabinet designed to support it. A dishwasher, under-bench oven, drawer stack or pull-out bin uses space below even though the surface above still looks continuous.

After choosing the module arrangement, measure the sink cabinet internally and allow space for the sink rim, installation access and plumbing. Appliance dimensions and ventilation requirements should be confirmed with their manufacturers and installer.
3. Match the Sink to Its Cabinet Module
Once the lower-cabinet layout is fixed, compare the sink’s external left-to-right length with the internal width of the dedicated sink cabinet. The examples below are general starting points, not universal rules.

These ranges are general examples only. The final fit depends on the cabinet’s internal construction, sink rim, mounting method and plumbing layout.
4. Protect Preparation and Landing Space
After confirming the sink cabinet, place the sink within the full benchtop plan. Keep a practical uninterrupted area for chopping and food preparation, plus somewhere to set down dishes, groceries or frequently used items.
- Keep a useful uninterrupted preparation area beside the sink.
- Allow a landing area for dishes and items used around the sink.
- Check the tap position and rear benchtop strip.
- Avoid conflicts with a wall, cooktop or benchtop joint.
- Confirm the cut-out position with the cabinet maker and stone fabricator.
5. Compare Balanced and Crowded Space Allocation

The sink dominates the run and leaves fragmented work areas.

The sink, preparation and landing zones work together.
A larger sink is not automatically the better choice. Select a sink length that fits its cabinet while preserving useful space for the way the kitchen is used.
6. Look Inside and Beside the Sink Cabinet
Internal panels and hardware reduce the usable sink space, while a dishwasher, oven or other appliance in the neighbouring module prevents the bowl from extending sideways into that area.
7. Confirm the Installation Method
Top Mount
The sink rim sits above the benchtop.
Undermount
The sink is fixed below the stone benchtop.
Flush Mount
The sink rim sits level with the benchtop surface.
Each installation style uses a different cut-out and may require different clearance around the sink. Always use the correct cut-out drawing supplied for the sink.

Map the sink cabinet, dishwasher, oven, drawers and storage below.
Measure the sink cabinet internally and check plumbing obstacles.
Choose a sink length that preserves useful workspace.
