A sink’s material and manufacturing method affect corrosion resistance, shape, cleaning, noise and price. For most Australian homes, 304 stainless steel provides a strong everyday balance—but the steel grade alone does not tell you whether a sink is well made.
What is 304 stainless steel?
304 stainless steel is an austenitic grade commonly associated with an approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel composition. It offers good everyday corrosion resistance, is easy to clean and suits most residential kitchens. It is corrosion-resistant, not completely rust-proof.
304 stainless steel
Balanced corrosion resistance, durability, weight and price for most kitchens.
201 stainless steel
Uses less nickel and more manganese. Usually cheaper, with less corrosion margin in demanding conditions.
316 stainless steel
Adds molybdenum for stronger chloride resistance. Useful in harsher or coastal exposure, but more expensive.

“Handmade” does not automatically mean better. A well-made pressed sink can outperform a poorly welded fabricated sink. Compare the actual grade, thickness, finish, drainage and warranty.
Does sink thickness matter?
Thickness can improve rigidity and reduce a hollow feel, but it is only one part of sink quality. Bowl shape, steel grade, forming, weld finishing, mounting, sound pads and undercoating also affect how the sink feels and sounds after installation.


What should you inspect before buying a stainless steel sink?
Steel and finish
Confirm the stated grade and inspect whether the brushed grain is even.
Edges and corners
Look for smooth finishing, consistent radii and clean welded joins.
Drainage
Check the base slope and channel design rather than assuming a flat-looking base will drain well.
Noise control
Inspect sound pads and undercoating on the underside of the bowl.
Actual dimensions
Match the outside size, bowl size and depth to the cabinet and benchtop.
Installation method
Confirm whether the model supports undermount, top-mount or flush-mount installation.
Always confirm final specifications, cabinet fit, benchtop cut-out and installation requirements with the supplier, fabricator and licensed installer before ordering.
